Yemen amidst escalating regional conflict: A glance from within
Since October 7, regional military escalation has ushered in a new reality on the ground. Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have increased tensions and attracted the attention of the world to Yemen as a serious security threat to global commerce. In response, on January 12, the US and the UK launched air strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen to deter the group from their actions, an operation that continues to this day amidst rising militarization of the Red Sea.
As major global shipping and logistics companies have suspended activities through this critical waterway, the economic costs of the Red Sea escalation have been significant for economies worldwide. Cargo vessels are now diverting their routes connecting Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal to the southern tip of Africa, resulting in delays and additional costs for global supply chains. The continued escalation in the Red Sea and Yemen threatens to further destabilize the country’s already fragile economy, limiting international humanitarian efforts to address endemic poverty and effectively putting on hold the UN-led peace roadmap. While Yemen is feeling the primary effects of the conflict, neighboring states in the Red Sea and across the Middle East are also contending with risks to their political, economic, and environmental stability.
In light of the above developments, the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies, in cooperation with Ankara University Center for Middle Eastern Studies (ODAM) and Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences, invites you to a public panel discussion on the implications of the Red Sea attacks on peace efforts in Yemen and regional security, exploring ways to mitigate the escalation.
