The Yemen Peace Forum concluded an open day event on February 3, 2026, at Al- Mahrah University, as part of the campaign “Towards Environmentally Friendly Universities,” facilitated by the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies.
Held under the theme “Towards an Eco-Friendly Community,” the event was organized with the support of the local authority in Al-Mahrah Governorate, in partnership with the University’s Environmental Studies and Research Center, the Socotra Center for Humanitarian Studies, and the Governorate’s Sanitation and Improvement Fund.
Dr. Faiz Jamaan, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Al-Mahrah University, stated that the university places a strong emphasis on environmental issues. He noted that the university leadership has taken significant steps to promote responsible environmental practices, particularly through Decision No. 85, which prohibits the entry and use of single-use plastic bags on campus. This decision requires facilities and shops to utilize safe, eco-friendly alternatives that are biodegradable and recyclable. Jamaan also highlighted the importance of raising community awareness about protecting the environment, preserving natural resources, and reducing pollution.
Khadijah Bakreet, Assistant Deputy Governor for Women’s Affairs, praised the initiative launched by the University and expressed hope that similar activities will expand in the future to include schools and the wider community.
Noor Makki, the Campaign Coordinator and a member of the Yemen Peace Forum, explained that the campaign included field visits and discussion sessions, resulting in several key outcomes. These included drafting a proposed regulatory decision to reduce plastic bag use, supporting the University’s decision to ban single-use plastic bags, introducing environmentally friendly alternatives, and building partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
The open day program featured a campus cleanup campaign coordinated with the Sanitation and Improvement Fund, an awareness-raising seminar, speeches and cultural performances, an exhibition showcasing local products, and recognition of sanitation workers’ work.
The “Towards Environmentally Friendly Universities” campaign is part of the Yemen Peace Forum’s broader initiatives focused on youth priorities, civil society engagement, and advocacy regarding environmental issues and climate change.
