The Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies is seeking applications for its Non-Resident Fellowship Program, an opportunity for scholars and experts to contribute to cutting-edge policy research on Yemen and the region.

About the Fellowship

As a Non-Resident Fellow, you will join the Sana’a Center’s dynamic network of experts, contributing to knowledge production, policy engagement, and strategic dialogue on Yemen and the broader region. Fellows will conduct original research, provide expert analysis, and offer policy recommendations, advancing the Center’s mission to deepen understanding of Yemen’s political, economic, and social dynamics, as well as its geopolitical context. Additionally, Fellows will offer advisory support in their area of expertise, shaping research agendas and informing policy discussions.

Through this affiliation, Fellows will gain visibility via widely circulated publications in both English and Arabic, reaching policymakers, media, and research institutions. They will also have access to the Center’s research resources, Yemeni policymakers, and a broad network of regional and international experts, strengthening their influence and engagement in key policy circles.

The Sana’a Center welcomes applications from experts specializing in the following fields:

• Economic analysis with a gender lens
• International relations, with a focus on Yemen, the Horn of Africa, and the Gulf
• Peacebuilding and conflict analysis
• Political economy and war economies
• Political and security analysis
• Water management, environment, and climate change
• Transitional justice and reconciliation
• Microeconomics and local economic development

A strong understanding of Yemen’s social, political, and economic context is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce at least one policy paper per year or three shorter commentaries/analysis pieces.
• Contribute as a peer reviewer for relevant publications.
• Participate in at least one Sana’a Center seminar or public talk annually.
• Represent the Center at international conferences and policy forums as relevant to your expertise and the Center’s mission.
• Provide expert insights in meetings and briefing sessions with Yemeni and international policymakers, contributing to informed decision-making and policy discussions.
• Provide input on program design and research methodologies within your area of expertise, as needed, to enhance the Center’s research initiatives.
• Support the Center’s outreach by connecting it with policymakers, scholars, and funding opportunities.
• Respond to media queries as a Sana’a Center Non-Resident Fellow.

Qualifications & Skills

• A Master’s degree or higher; or at least five years of relevant professional experience, in political science, international development, journalism, economics, public policy, climate studies, gender studies, international law, or a related field,
• Proven expertise in policy analysis and research, with a strong ability to contribute to high-level discussions and policy development.
• A demonstrated track record of published work in academic, policy-oriented, or other recognized platforms, showcasing the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
• In-depth knowledge of Yemen’s social, political, and economic landscape, with a strong understanding of its dynamics and regional context.

Position Details

• Reports to: Executive Director for Knowledge Production
• Contract Type: Zero-Hour Contract (Consultancy): Paid per requested service, either per publication or at a daily rate for other contributions
• Duration: 12 months, renewable
• Location: Remote
• Start Date: As soon as possible

Founded in 2014, the Sana’a Center is one of the few independent research centers that has continued to operate in Yemen throughout the ongoing conflict. While the Center maintains cordial relations with all key stakeholders, it has remained fiercely unaligned with any of the belligerent parties. The Sana’a Center has thus maintained a unique position and the ability to work throughout Yemen and beyond.
