Yemen’s per capita water consumption is only 1% of the global average | with Musaed Aqlan

Despite the amount of rainfall decreasing and the rate of depletion of groundwater used for agriculture increasing, many Yemenis are unaware of the water crisis facing the country. The use of solar power to extract water has accelerated the rate of water consumption, and instead of solar energy being a solution for farmers, it has become a major issue. While Yemen is one of the countries most affected by climate change, it is also one of the least likely to benefit from climate funds.

Musaed Aqlan is a senior researcher at the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies whose research and studies focus on water, the environment, and climate change. This podcast was recorded on the sidelines of the second edition of the YIF, a forum organized by the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies and bringing together more than 250 participants from inside and outside Yemen, including representatives of the Yemeni government and various political actors, activists, civil society representatives, academics, diplomats, and international mediators to discuss the conflict.

The interview is conducted by Ahed Yassin, a journalist and anchor at Al-Jumhuriya TV.
