The Yemen Brief | Episode 11 | Mahri Community Weighed Down By Prevalence of Drug Abuse

A governorate, once considered far away and isolated from conflict, is now in the midst of a political storm and social crisis due to the prevalence of drug use. Al-Ghaydah (the Capital city of Al-Mahra governorate) has become a brisk market for drug trade and use, and almost everyone can now easily access “Shabo”. Despite the increasing number of addicts, there is lack of rehabilitation centers which represents a significant dilemma for the Mahri community.
In this episode of the Yemen Brief podcast, we host Khadija Bakrit, the Assistant Undersecretary for Women’s Affairs in Al- Mahra, Azzan al-Qumairi, an Activist and former director of public relations at the governorate office, Captain Aref Al-Awbthany, who is in charge of the Counter Narcotics Division in the Criminal Investigation Department of Al-Mahra Governorate, and Doctor Abdul Qadir Bayazid, who specializes in treating addiction.
