Transitional Justice Week in Yemen commenced on August 29, marking the launch of an initiative aimed at highlighting the importance of transitional justice in achieving sustainable peace in Yemen.

Led by the Transitional Justice Team at the Yemen Peace Forum in partnership with the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies, events running from August 29 to September 2 will bring together victims of violations, representatives of victims’ associations, youth, civil society organizations, as well as Yemeni and international human rights experts and advocates.

Sessions will tackle central themes of transitional justice, including enforced disappearances, truth-seeking, accountability, reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence, while highlighting the tireless efforts of civil society organizations and families of the disappeared.

Discussions will also explore how cultural activities, arts, and media play a key role in documentation and memorialization, helping to amplify victims’ voices, acknowledge their experiences, and lay the groundwork for transitional justice. Particular attention will be given to empowering Yemeni civil society to scale up efforts related to transitional justice, and how international mechanisms can play a supportive role while safeguarding the primacy of locally driven processes.

The Yemen Peace Forum is a Track II platform for civil society and youth, facilitated by the Sana’a Center with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Forum seeks to invest in and empower the next generation of Yemeni youth and civil society actors, engaging them in critical national issues.
